Worst of pandemic yet to come: WHO warn

Image
GENEVA: Six months since the new coronavirus outbreak, the pandemic is still far from over, the World Health Organisation said on Monday, warning that “the worst is yet to come”. Reaching the half-year milestone just as the death toll surpassed 500,000 and the number of confirmed infections topped 10 million, the WHO said it was a moment to recommit to the fight to save lives. “Six months ago, none of us could have imagined how our world — and our lives — would be thrown into turmoil by this new virus,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual briefing. “We all want this to be over. We all want to get on with our lives. But the hard reality is this is not even close to being over. “Although many countries have made some progress, globally the pandemic is actually speeding up. “We’re all in this together, and we’re all in this for the long haul. “We will need even greater stores of resilience, patience, humility and generosity in the months ahead. “We have already lost so muc

Mr Biden clubbed Kashmir and Assam in India with the forced detention of over a million Uyghur Muslims in western China

Image
WASHINGTON: Democratic presidential nominee and former US vice president Joe Biden wants India to restore the rights of people of occupied Kashmir and has expressed disappointment over recent constitutional amendments that specifically target Muslims. In a policy paper —  “Agenda for Muslim American community”  — posted recently on his campaign website, Mr Biden clubbed Kashmir and Assam in India with the forced detention of over a million Uyghur Muslims in western China, and discrimination and atrocities against Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslim minority. “In Kashmir, the Indian government should take all necessary steps to restore rights for all the people of Kashmir. Restrictions on dissent, such as preventing peaceful protests or shutting or slowing down the Internet, weaken democracy,” says the paper while outlining the policies Mr Biden will pursue if elected president in November. “Joe Biden has been disappointed by the measures that the government of India has taken with the implementa

US President Donald Trump denied showed Russia had offered bounties to Taliban-linked militants

Image
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump denied on Sunday he had been briefed on intelligence that reportedly showed Russia had offered bounties to Taliban-linked militants for killing US soldiers in Afghanistan. In a pair of  early morning tweets , Trump angrily slammed the  report by  The New York Times  as “Probably just another phony Times hit job, just like their failed Russia Hoax.” “Nobody briefed or told me, @VP Pence, or Chief of Staff @MarkMeadows about the so-called attacks on our troops in Afghanistan by Russians, as reported through an ‘anonymous source’ by the Fake News @nytimes,” he wrote. “Everybody is denying it & there have not been many attacks on us....” “Nobody’s been tougher on Russia than the Trump Administration.”

Hundreds of Hong Kongers marched silently through the city’s streets

Image
Hundreds of Hong Kongers marched silently through the city’s streets on Sunday in protest against the looming  national security legislation  to be implemented by the mainland Chinese government. Riot police armed with shields were present as the crowd moved from Jordan to Mong Kok in the Kowloon district, as part of a ‘silent protest’, in which they marched but the usual chanting or slogan shouting was mainly absent. The proposed national security laws were discussed by the National People’s Congress Standing Committee on Sunday in Beijing at a three-day meeting. The laws are expected to be passed before the end of June but a draft has yet to be made public. ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER AD The event came a day after Hong Kong police refused permission for an annual march that is held on July 1 to mark the handover of the city from Britain to Chinese authorities 23 years ago. Police cited in a statement that a march would be in violation of Hong Kong’s current ban of groups of more than 50

Taliban rejected claiming their fighters had received rewards from Moscow’s spies to kill US troops

Image
KABUL: The Taliban on Saturday rejected a newspaper report claiming their fighters had received rewards from Moscow’s spies to kill US troops in Afghanistan. The  New York Times   reported  on Friday that bounties offered by a notorious arm of Russia’s military intelligence service gave incentives to Taliban fighters to target US forces, just as US President Donald Trump tries to withdraw troops and end America’s longest war. “The nineteen-year jihad of the Islamic Emirate is not indebted to the beneficence of any intelligence organ or foreign country,” the Taliban said in a statement issued in Kabul. The group also denied previous US accusations it was given arms by Russia. “The Islamic Emirate has made use of weapons, facilities and tools ... that were already present in Afghanistan or are war spoils frequently seized from the opposition in battles.” The Taliban said home-made explosives accounted for most of the casualties among US forces. The group reiterated it was committed to an

US intelligence has concluded that the Russian military offered bounties to Taliban-linked militants

US intelligence has concluded that the Russian military offered bounties to Taliban-linked militants in Afghanistan to kill American troops and other coalition forces, the * New York Times* reported  on Friday. Citing officials briefed on the matter, the  Times  said the United States determined months ago that a Russian military intelligence unit linked to assassination attempts in Europe had offered rewards for successful attacks last year. Islamist militants, or armed criminal elements closely associated with them, are believed to have collected some bounty money, the newspaper said. The White House, the CIA and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence declined requests from  Reuters  for comment on the  Times  report. President Donald Trump has been briefed on the intelligence finding, the   Times   said. It said the White House has yet to authorise any steps against Russia in response to the bounties. Of the 20 Americans killed in combat in 2019, the  Times  said, it wa

Six Injured in Glasgow Stabbing attack, suspected dead

Image
GLASGOW: Scottish police said officers shot dead a man after a suspected stabbing attack on Friday at a Glasgow hotel housing asylum seekers that left six others injured, including one of their colleagues. Police Scotland said that the incident at the Park Inn hotel in the city’s centre was not being treated as a terrorist incident. “The individual who was shot by armed police has died,” Assistant Chief Constable Steve Johnson said, adding that the situation was “contained” and there was no risk to the general public. He said that the wounded 42-year-old police officer was in a critical but stable condition, but gave no details on how he or the other victims were injured. The five other victims are all men, aged 17, 18, 20, 38 and 53, the police said, without revealing their condition. Police were called to the hotel at about 1pm and the surrounding area was cordoned off. One man who said he lived on the hotel’s third floor told Sky News television he heard a man shouting for help and

Facebook Inc is tightening its political ad rules in the United States

Facebook Inc is tightening its political ad rules in the United States, it said on Wednesday, requiring new disclosures for its site and photo-sharing platform Instagram ahead of the US presidential election in November 2020. The social media giant is introducing a “confirmed organisation” label for US political advertisers who show government-issued credentials to demonstrate their legitimacy. All advertisers running ads on politics or social issues will also have to post their contact information, even if they are not seeking the official label. Advertisers must comply by mid-October or risk having their ads cut off.

Unilever PLC said on Friday it will stop advertising on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter

Image
THE HAGUE: Unilever PLC said on Friday it will stop advertising on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter in the United States for the rest of the year, citing “divisiveness and hate speech during this polarised election period in the US”. The consumer goods company, which owns brands like Dove Soap and Lipton tea, joins a growing advertising boycott against Facebook as part of the “Stop Hate for Profit” campaign started by U.S. civil rights groups after the death of George Floyd. The effort called on Facebook, which owns Instagram, to do more to stop hate speech and misinformation. Shares of Facebook and Twitter both fell more than 7 per cent. “Continuing to advertise on these platforms at this time would not add value to people and society. We will be monitoring ongoing and will revisit our current position if necessary,” Unilever said in a statement. “The Stop Hate for Profit” campaign focused on giving specific recommendations to Facebook, though Twitter has also long been under pressure

Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim: Bismillah plays an important role in Islamic Culture

Image
Bismillah plays an important role in Islamic Culture. Following the practice of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blesssings be upon him and his Household (Ahlul Bayt), Muslims begin with the name of Allah before doing anything.  Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim  is translated as "In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful". Bismillah occurs at the head of every chapter ( surah ) in the Holy Qur'an, with the exception of the 9th chapter, Surah al-Baraa'at (also called Surah al-Tawbah). Calligraphers have written bismillah in many ways. This pictorial gives us a unique opportunity to look at some of the ways bismillah can be written. In a letter on behalf of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him and his Household This bismillah is taken from a letter written on behalf of Prophet Muhammad [s] to the Ruling Archbishop of Egypt. The letter was written in the fifth year after Hijrah (627 CE). This letter is preserved in the Topkapi Museum, in Istanbul, Turkey. The

Mark Wood said he felt like he was in a science fiction film

Image
LONDON: Mark Wood said he felt like he was in a science fiction film after entering England’s bio-secure training ‘bubble’ ahead of next month’s Test series against the West Indies. Durham fast bowler Wood is one of 29 England cricketers currently at Hampshire’s Ageas Bowl, the venue for the first Test, all of whom have produced negative results in an initial round of coronavirus (Covid-19) testing by the England and Wales Cricket Board. The series will be played behind closed doors in a bid to reduce the risk of players contracting Covid-19 and officials are doing all they can to ensure the players remain virus free. This has included changing the original venues to the Ageas Bowl and Old Trafford, both of which have onsite hotels, for what will be cricket’s first major international series since lockdown. “The temperature check [upon arrival] was weird,” said Wood during a conference call on Wednesday. “You walk through a tent and they tell you you’re all right. I don’t know what hap

Imran Khan inspired the young generation to become a fast-bowler

Image
LAHORE: Former skipper Aamir Sohail believes the 1992 World Cup winning Pakistan captain Imran Khan inspired the young generation to become a fast-bowler, saying the legendary all-rounder set high standards in the game. “Remember that 1977 Sydney Test when Imran bowled a spell with his shirt torn and when those pictures came out, it inspired the young generation,” Aamir said on his YouTube channel. Aamir — who formed a very successful opening partnership with fellow left-handed batsman Saeed Anwar in the 1990s — said in the past Pakistan did not had the tradition of getting fast bowlers on regular basis or in huge numbers. “Imran’s inspirational performances and his aura inspired the young generation to become a fast bowler and during 1980s we use to get good fast bowlers,” he said. “When you talk about Imran’s greatness and have to define him. He knew the way to inspire the youngsters.”

A boycott of goods from China may not be feasible

Image
NEW DELHI: A boycott of goods from China may not be feasible as India is dependent on such imports, although New Delhi should try to cut its dependence on them, India’s top export promotion grouping said on Thursday. As calls have grown in India for Chinese products to be shunned after a  border clash  between the neighbours killed 20 Indian soldiers, customs officials at the key port of Chennai have held shipments originating from China for extra checks. “We extend our support to the government to make India self-reliant in the face of the recent tiff with China, but we should also keep in mind that we depend on China for a lot of key raw materials,” said Sharad Kumar Saraf, president of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO). The government should ask Indians to stop buying Chinese items that are also made by Indian companies, but a ban or boycott of all Chinese products would hurt Indian manufacturers, Saraf told reporters.

Authorities focused on number of cases reported in a day

Image
REPORTS that Covid-19 cases in Pakistan have been falling in recent days should be viewed with caution. According to  data released  by the National Command and Operation Centre, the past few days witnessed between 4,000 to 5,000 daily cases as compared to mid-June which saw between 5,000 and 7,000 cases. If reviewed without context, these figures do look promising. However, the same period in which coronavirus cases supposedly declined also witnessed a sharp reduction in tests. Where authorities had conducted north of 31,000 in a single day around mid-June, in the past few days the numbers have fallen to below 25,000. In fact, according to one NCOC press release on June 25, the total number of tests was below 22,000. While officials are eager to pat themselves on the back and are marvelling at what they claim is the success of ‘smart lockdowns’ or achievement of ‘herd immunity’, the celebrations are premature if not entirely unjustified. The true picture of Pakistan’s Covid-19 infecti

Prince William is fed up of the drama surrounding Prince Harry’s move

Image
Prince Harry and Prince William have been on unpleasant terms for a while if reports are to be believed And while earlier reports may have suggested that the feud is starting to settle, new sources have stepped forth claiming that the big bro is still holding some grudges against Harry over his move to LA. As per  Us Weekly ’s source, William has absolutely had it with the drama surrounding Harry’s exit and is still somewhat disturbed over the move. “William is so tired and done with the drama of it all. Seeing Harry cut ties with virtually every aspect of his English life and identity is so hard to fathom,” spilled the insider. They further said that Harry decision “breaks William’s heart” and the two brothers "need space and time to breathe, then hopefully they’ll work it out.” Earlier this month, a separate source told the same publication that, “William’s advised Harry to return to London or move elsewhere, somewhere safer. He’s concerned about his brother’s well-being and saf

US states bring back strict corona virus measures as cases near record

Image
HOUSTON:  Authorities in the US  on Wednesday have started imposing  strict measures, that include quarantines and stay-at-home advice, as a spike in daily coronavirus cases hit record levels after surging across the nation's South and West. Nearly four months after reporting its first death from COVID-19, the United States faces a deepening health crisis as a wave of infections hits young Americans and experts issue new acute warnings. More than 35,900 cases were recorded in the past 24 hours, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University, with heavily populated states including Florida, Texas and California all reporting daily record cases. The world's largest economy is already the country hardest hit by the pandemic, with a mounting death toll of almost 122,000. Some officials — including the Texas governor — who loosened restrictions on business, dining, public gatherings and tourism, are now urging residents to again stay home. Three northeastern states that made progr

Plasma Therapy for Covid-19, The hopes

Image
From the time we discussed Convalescent Plasma Therapy (CPT) for treatment of Covid-19  in Prism , putting forward the argument that we are sailing unchartered waters, there has been an explosion in the number of healthcare institutions across the world scrambling to try this therapy. Pakistan has perhaps been a couple of steps ahead of the rest of the world, with CPT beginning to be regarded not only by the public at large, but also by the medical community as the magic elixir against Covid-19. Numerous posts on social media, including Facebook and Twitter, have seen individuals imploring people who have recovered from the virus to donate their plasma in order to help save the lives of their loved ones. A number of  websites  have cropped up to facilitate connecting potential donors with recipients. The great humanitarian side of Pakistanis has emerged. Quite similar to the way that people of Pakistan responded to the economic woes of daily wage workers by distribution of ration, altr

Glimmer of Hope that testing has been reduced over the past few days: Pakistan

Image
ISLAMABAD: With all trends of the novel coronavirus changing downwards for the last five days, health experts hope it can be the start of declining of the graph. They anticipate that the number of cases may further decrease but the number of deaths may increase as a large number of patients are still on ventilators and around 90 per cent of them may not survive. The country reported 3,622 Covid-19 cases and 78 deaths over the past 24 hours, taking the national tally of cases to 191,022 and casualties to 3,808. According to data released by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), 4,000 to 5,000 cases were being reported daily for the past few days, but the number has been declining with every passing day. However, the worrisome thing is that the number of tests, which had reached over 32,000, has reduced to around 25,000 during the past few days.

UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations and the Arab League (AL) joined in calling on Wednesday for Israel to abandon its plans to annex parts of the occupied West Bank. The calls were made during a UN Security Council video conference in which several government ministers participated. It was the last international meeting before Israel goes ahead with the plans as early as July 1. For their part, more than 1,000 European lawmakers from 25 countries  also urged their leaders  to step in and stop the Israeli plan. “I call on the Israeli government to abandon its annexation plans,” said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres at the conference. He reiterated the longstanding goal of a two-state solution with an independent, contiguous, sovereign and viable Palestinian state, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states. Arab League secretary general Ahmed Aboul Gheit said annexation “will destroy any prospect for peace in the future.” “The possible move by the Israeli government to annex parts

How to survive in this world, difficult but possible, focus on it .....

Image
How to survive in this world, difficult but possible , focus on it ..... It is difficult for every individual to select future goals but through proper guidance and experience you will become a successful person. But its depend upon from person to person and human psycho also involve here. But as per my suggestion and lot of business teachers shared that for that there are two different ways for successful life. 1.       EDUCATION 2.       BUSSINESS 1.EDUCATION:- Education is necessary for every individual for successful life and more earning through education you can earn more than uneducated or low education person. For example if you get high education like MBA, PHD you can earn huge salaries rather that graduated persons. If you have just matriculation you can earn average salary and helper type of post. “It is clear that high education mean high salary and low education mean low salary”   2.BUSSINESS: Bussiness is the easiest way to get more income its doesn’t

Austria warns against travel to German state after coronavirus outbreak

Austria has issued a warning against travel to the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia after a coronavirus outbreak at a meatpacking plant there, Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz  said. According to  Reuters , the move puts the state in the same category as the Italian region of Lombardy, the epicentre of Italy's coronavirus outbreak, which was one of the worst in Europe.

US facing 'critical' coronavirus surge

Image
White House advisor Anthony Fauci has warned the next two weeks would be “critical to our ability to address surgings” in Florida, Texas and other states,   AFP   reported. However, President Donald Trump, whose handling of the crisis has been widely criticized as erratic, is determined to fast-track efforts to restore normality. He continued to stoke controversy on Tuesday, doubling down on weekend comments he wanted to slow testing because so many confirmed infections made the US look bad. “I don't kid,” Trump said, after a White House official described his initial comments as just a joke.
